Second Life is a Massive Multiplayer Online World where you can get a free account and interact with thousands of people from around the world.

Steps

Log on to http://www.secondlife.com/join/
Choose a name. (At present, last names are chosen from a predetermined list.)
Enter the other requested information.
All that's needed is a valid email address, to confirm you aren't a bot. You can get 250 Linden Dollars if you tell them a valid credit card number, though.

Tips

Second Life is a world where the only limits are what you can imagine. Unlike almost any other online "game" (in quotes because hard core SLers don't think of it as a game), 99% of the content in the world of SL is created by the users. You can even sell items you create to other users, and convert the SL currency to real money!

Warnings

You must be 18 years old to join Second Life.
There is also a "Teen Second Life" for ages 13-18.
